Choosing your desired metal surface finish

The higher the grit finish the smoother the metals surface will become. The smoother we get the final finish the greater the protection will be to prevent grime, salts, corrosion and tea-staining from occurring on the metal. Therefore a lesser amount of cleaning in the future will be needed. The better the mirror finish the more likely it is too with stand future staining. Please see below a brief discussion on each polished metal finish.

Mirror Finish - a smooth highly polished surface produced on metal by mechanical or electrolytic polishing or lapping. It's a a very smooth reflective finish produced on the surface of a metal, an experienced metal polisher is highly capable of achieving suc a finsih.. The mean particles size on a 2000 grit sandpaper is ~ 1 um, which is not that smooth compared with the wavelength of visible light. But usually when I want a mirror finish, 2000 grit will provide a satisfactory result.  This finish is produced by polishing with at least a 320 grit belt or wheel finish and various other buffing or metal polishing methods all the way up to a 2000 grit and hand polish finish. Care will be taken in making sure all surface defects are removed. The part is sisal buffed and then color buffed to achieve a mirror finish. Depending on the original product the mirror finsih outcome can be a long process.
